Instant Energy Savings Up to 80%

Assured Self Storage was constructed in the year 2010, which is based in Duncanville, TX. This facility spreads across 5 acres of land and has several self-storage units. However, it used lights that were neither long-lasting nor energy-efficient.

The manager of this facility wanted lighting products that would illuminate the facility’s exterior sufficiently and send some lighting to the interiors. The maintenance charges would need to be very low. This is important to keep the operating costs to the minimum.

Also, the facility has 32 surveillance cameras, which were dependent on premium-quality lighting for ideal performance. Terry Crawly, the manager, settled on 20W LED wall-pack fixtures having dimmers. Once these lights were installed, they provided the facility instant energy savings by 80% as compared to other facilities that employ 150W Metal Halide wall-packs.

The fully gasketed, die-cast metal LED light fixtures offer a life expectancy of 50,000 hours. Also, they are resilient enough for the harsh weather conditions of outdoors. Using CCTs of 5000K, the fully cutoff light fixtures reduce light pollution. They even ensure maximum lighting in areas that actually need light. With LEDs, it is now an easy process to enhance lighting efficiency while lowering energy costs.

These lighting solutions are even UL listed for environments that have humidity, wetness, or rainfall. They can operate perfectly in temperatures between -30 degrees C and 50 degrees C. The light these lighting products produce provides a soft, inviting ambiance and improves the facility’s luxurious look. There is no dispute that LEDs outperform and outlast other kinds of lighting. They conserve energy and increase the overall return on investment.

Self Storage Lighting Plans - Get it Right

Why are lighting plans important? They allow you to see your area and how it would look under LED Lighting taking the risk out of buying. We can easily run different options with our lights, and provide you with the proper information and guidance. We're here to save you money with LED. But it's as important to get the storage room lighting right.

How to Create an Energy-Efficient Self Storage Unit

1.      Eliminate Inefficient Light Fixtures

HID Light Bulbs Image

Old storage facilities, that were constructed in the 60s, were less client-oriented than today. Almost all employed wall-packs and each feature a spring wound timer for light control. Common traditional lights used in storage spaces are metal halides and fluorescents.

Metal halide bulbs are gas discharge bulbs, which discharge an electric arc through a gaseous mix. They employ halides like iodides or bromides from metals, which are combined with mercury vapor and argon.

These lamps have several deficiencies as compared to energy-efficient LED solutions for storage spaces. The major one is that they require a longer warm-up period, which is the longest for any bulb out there.

Most of these metal halide bulbs will even take 15-20 minutes for meeting the right operating temperature. Meaning that these lights need to be switched on for longer times than required as they are not on demand.

While metal halide bulbs emit bright light, the life expectancy of an average halide is somewhere between 6,000-15,000 hours. Plus, integrating light control features like dimmers may affect the already shorter lamp lives. However, the interesting part is that most metal halide bulbs cost almost as much as LEDs.

Despite their higher cost, you still have to spend more on maintenance and replacement bulbs. High-quality LEDs have a lifespan of around 100,000 hours. Even when they are switched on for 12 hours a day, they will function effectively for more than 10 years.

Also, metal halide bulbs even disperse the light in multiple directions. The light delivered to all sections of a self-storage facility (in 360-degree arcs) is not at all effective. A remarkable park of this light is lost to space and also, you do not get focused light.

2.      Reduce Light Pollution

The most recognizable outcome of light pollution is skyglow that is light dispersed to the sky at night. This causes a glow over urban and suburban areas. It is estimated to cost the United States $5-$10 billion yearly in misused energy costs. As urbanization goes up, these charges will also take roots, unless mitigated.

Glare is often light misdirected at the eyes of drivers at night or of pedestrians walking. Unfortunately, the lights aiding vision at night could cause the interference of it actually. Badly designed outdoor fixtures with extreme contrast between bright and dark spots become a security hazard.

Light trespass is the light that lights neighboring properties. As it trespasses, this light is actually unwanted. While skyglow robs people of a star-filled sky, light trespass robes them of their sleep and peace of mind. Light pollution does not only disturb circadian rhythms but also affects other living organisms. Scientific reports show that sea turtles, insects, and even plants succumb to the misdirected, excess light.

3.       Employ Premium-Quality Light Sources

The CCT (Correlated Color Temperature) and the CRI (Color Rendering Index) value of light sources dramatically impact the light’s quality it produces.

Color Rendering Index - Quality of Light

CRI is a measure of the prowess of light that reveals the actual hues of items in comparison to ideal light sources. When the CRI is higher, the quality of light is better. However, it is worth noting that several applications require lights having high CRIs.

If you like to illuminate self storage units so products are visible and clear, then high-CRI lighting solutions are necessary. These storage units are not spacious and hold various kinds of items. If this space is not well-lit, people would not be able to locate their items easily and you may not receive repeat business.

LED Color Rendering Index (CRI)

Premium quality lights having correct CRI values like LED self storage unit lights, makes it a lot simpler for tenants. Many LEDs feature CRI values of above 70 and thus, produce light which can be compared to daylight. Conventional bulbs have lower CRI values. Among all, HPS bulbs are the worst as they produce yellow light and shade everything with a yellow hue.

4.      Employ Energy-Efficient Lighting Solutions

Today, storage spaces have become so popular. Modernity has played a major role in the increasing popularity of self-storage facilities. Sometimes, relationships fall apart or divorces happen, which have given rise to such self-storage units. These spaces are helpful until people anticipate their next move. Many people cherish the fact that their things are in a secure place till the time they will require them.

Self storage facility owners need to offer both security and safety in their facilities. This prevents the damage, theft, or loss of treasured personal items. Premium-quality lighting solutions go a long way toward offering safety. Yet, it is important that the lighting needs to be cost-effective.

The lack of energy efficiency of your light sources can impact you a lot. Making use of the same lighting solutions you have employed for years is not the ideal option. Go for newer and user-friendly storage lighting products to attract customers. They will love the place if it is protected and well-lit.

Good security and perfect lighting are interrelated. These factors are what most of the potential customers will search for. Badly lit storage units provide a sense of insecurity and drive your would-be customers away. Bad lighting is a huge catalyst even for criminal activities. Vandals and thieves are more likely to enter the facilities that are badly lit.

In several cases, these self storage areas are unmanned for reducing running costs. So, unmanned businesses are reliant mostly on premium-quality security and lighting features. If the lighting system is inefficient, you may need to lower your charges.

5.      Use Light Control Features

It is recommended to pair LED lights with other features like dimmers, occupancy sensors, or photo controls to help saving power. So, occupancy sensors conserve power during ideal times like late-night hours when there is low traffic around the facility if installed in elevator bays, hallways, or shared spaces. Use them in those areas of your facility that people visit occasionally like the maintenance unit or a restroom for ensuring lights switch off when there is no one around.

Also, these sensors can help reduce power usage at different times of a month. Many managers report that traffic goes higher at the month’s beginning and end and lower on usual days. So, these sensors control when lights switch on and for how long.

Sensors can stop energy-wasting when your storage unit is less busy. It also helps in revealing the usage trends of your facility. LED parking lot fixtures can be improved with photo controls for ensuring better power efficiency.

Types of Lighting Controls

Occupancy Sensors

Lighting controls sense people in a self-storage facility. They light up the entire vicinity automatically. These lights sensors even switch off or dim the lighting automatically once all users have moved out of the area.

Motion Sensors

The light control feature is perfect for security and outdoor lights that need to be switched on for a shorter period of time. These sensors employ ultrasonic sensing for tracking movements in and around the storage facility.

Photocell Light Sensors

These light control features can even sense the levels of natural light and regular the output in an area accordingly. Usually, these lighting solutions are paired with security lights for outdoors.

Preset Controls

These lighting products have switches and sliders, which out the adjustment of light entirely in your hands. Users can employ the present controls or can adjust them as they see fit.

Using these light controls in an area, your LED storage lighting solutions can lower energy charges by up to 75%. Plus, these smart sensors can track temperature, movement, and ambient light. After that, they feed this significant data to the light control system. These parameters will help in lowering the cooling expenses and ensure you have a more efficient HVAC system. The light fixtures for self storage will also have a longer lifespan. So, switch to our innovative LED lighting solutions for reducing costs, for improving visibility and safety, for saving energy, for being green, and for taking advantageof tax credits and rebates.
