Livestock Barn Lighting Plans

1. Arrange the essentials

The primary step of our working method is to arrange all the current indoor requirements of the livestock barn. We think it’s necessary to understand the present situation for making accurate decisions regarding lighting solutions for the barn.

2. Make a lighting scheme

A well-prepared plan will give you a good idea about the installation appearance and the expected level of lights that will be put. You spend nothing on making the plan but get to see the looks of the lighted space before actually spending.

3. Re-check the plan and quotes of The Lighting Center

As you can see, the brightening level is perfectly balanced and the lighting level is even, free of any tunneling or shadowing. This all happened due to the risk-free lights of The Lighting Center and the same would happen for you too.

Led Poultry Lighting

Commercial farms like those of turkey and chicken must have efficient lighting. About a 100% increase in worldwide food and poultry demand is expected to occur before 2030.

The chicken farmers are resorting to more advanced technologies for boosting production and bringing it in tandem with demand. However, they also need to maintain the costs and decrease the threat to the environment. They can do so by focusing on the crucial areas like food and nutrients, watering, air conditioning, housing, and lighting too.

Lighting is extremely important for poultry farms and other livestock rearing spaces. It also impacts the turkeys and chickens in various ways, including reproduction and growth most importantly. Controlled light exposure is popularly held to be an effective reproduction stimulator and is widely utilized by the farmers in commercial poultries.

However, conventional lights like fluorescent and incandescent lamps are still preferred by many livestock farmers which are not good for the poultry animals. Their CRI or light quality is nowhere to close to sunlight, and hence poor for animals. In contrast, the LED lights prove to be better for poultry farms.

Light from incandescent isn’t the same as sunlight and animals prefer the latter. Hence, the lighting plans of modern farms must attempt to imitate the spectrum of the sun.

Ammonia is another major problem of poultry farms and lighting systems that can’t handle it are not desirable. The lighting must be able to sustain hot spray downs and ammonia breakouts. Also, the lighting should be long-lasting.

Out of all the lighting options for the agriculture sector, LED lights are the best with high environment-safety and efficiency factors. Their superior white light is best for indoor spaces. Setting LED lights in the poultry farm as per its distinctive spectral needs helps the farmers in reducing stress and subsequent death of birds. Dim lights help with the balancing of cardiac rhythms in the birds which subsequently boosts egg production.

What lighting level is required for poultry farms?

Light intensities for better brooding and bird growth are the primary demands of the breeders and processors. This calls for the setting up of-

3 plus foot candle for brooding

0.5-1 foot candle for optimum growth

It becomes very important to design an appropriate lighting system for the farms.

Choosing the Right color temperature is important

The most recommendable color for the lights is the white light of around 5000k, containing few blue spectrums, and dimmable too.

Additional suggestions

Do frequent cleaning of the lights at a 2-week gap.

Mount lights at more height for better distribution.

Ammonia-resistant lighting solution

Ammonia resistance abilities are most important for poultry farm lights. The indoors of the livestock farms are full of ammonia that impacts the performance of light fixtures. It does so by gathering over the lens and drastically harming its lumen point into making it useless. The lights that can resist ammonia have significantly better durability and continue to work for longer in high ammonia-concentrated environments.

Dairy Farm Lighting

Dairy Farm

Efficient lighting is good for milk production in dairy farms too. This claim stands supported by a study of the Michigan State University that displayed an approximate 8% boost in milk production due to the use of LEDs for an advanced lighting system. The same facility was previously running upon metal halide light fixtures that were poor for the cattle sheds. LEDs made the production go along with decreasing the power costs.

The blue light in LEDs reduces the production of melatonin in cattle. More research has established the significant benefit of LED lights in improving overall cattle health because they don’t flicker as compared to their conventional counterparts like fluorescent lights. Dependable fixtures are very important for cattle chute lights.

Farmers are also able to work better in environments that have uniformly arranged and brighter lights like LEDs for the cattle farms. There is no worry about plop pile-ups in dark spaces anymore. An additional benefit of this involves a lesser risk of bacteria growth and boosted levels of general cleanliness. Other than ensuring better lives for the animals, the owners can also have the satisfaction and happiness of having ensured a safer work environment for the employees too.
